Experimental Liquid Form Enamel Workshop

Instructor: Tom Ellis

Date: March 20, 2010

Time: 9:00AM to 4:00PM

Cost: $80.00 per person (Includes all enamel used on project)

Materials Fee: $5.00 to 15.00 depending on choice of copper (you may also bring your own copper)

Workshop Description:

Liquid clear or liquid white enamel can be painted on, dipped, sprayed or poured over clean copper to create pattern and/or imagery. Once the liquid enamel has been dried, sgraffito can be employed to further develop the imagery.

After firing, the resulting copper oxide on the bare copper surface can be covered with transparent enamels for color and texture, or the oxide may be removed with pickle for non-textured areas of color. There is lots of room for experimentation with liquid enamels and copper oxide. Objects to be made in this workshop include jewelry shapes, bowl and tray forms and wall pieces.

All skill levels welcome.

If you plan to arrive the evening before, we recommend Comfort Suites, (859) 291-6700. Tell them you are visiting Thompson  Enamel and you will receive a reduced rate (rate code THOMPS) of $89 for a standard room. Separation Enamel Workshop

Instructor: Tom Ellis

Date: March 27, 2010

Time: 9:00AM to 4:30 PM

Cost: $80.00 per person

Material Fee: $5.00 to $15.00 pending your choice of copper (you may also bring your own copper)

Workshop Description:

Separation enamel is a technique which produces unusual pattern and color blends. 2-3 layers of contrasting enamel colors are applied to a copper surface. Separation is painted onto those layers and fired. The separation works with the viscosity and surface tension of the enamels - sinking and spreading apart the layers to result in marbleized effects.

Objects to be made in this workshop include jewelry shapes, bowl and tray forms and wall pieces.

All skill levels welcome.

If you plan to arrive the evening before, we recommend Comfort Suites, (859) 291-6700. (Last two images above) Two cloisonne works in progress

Jewel-Like Cloisonné Enamel Workshop

Instructor: Tom Ellis

Date: April 10, 2010

Time: 9:00AM to 4:30 PM

Cost: $80.00 per person

Material Fee: $5.00 to $15.00 pending your choice of copper, silver cloisonné wire and silver and/or gold foil. (you may also bring your own materials if you have them)

Workshop Description:

Cloisonné is a technique where thin ribbons of copper or silver wire are used to define a line drawing or "cartoon". When the wires are fired onto a base coat of enamel, they create cells or cloisons. Silver and/or gold foil can be placed into various cells and fired, then coated with transparent enamels for added highlights. Transparent and/or opaque enamels are built up in the cells over mulitple firings to fill the cells. The surface is then ground down to a flush surface and fired again to bring back a glossy surface.

This workshop will include many tips and tricks not shown in most cloisonne workshops. The approach is making a "jewel".

All skill levels welcome as we always start from the beginning. There will be unique information useful for enamelers who have done cloisonne before. We will look at non traditional applications to cloisonne.

If you plan to arrive the evening before, we recommend Comfort Suites, (859) 291-6700. Tell them you are visiting Thompson  Enamel and you will receive a reduced rate (rate code THOMPS) of $89 for a standard room. They are at 420 Riverboat Row, Newport, KY, and only 4 blocks from Thompson.Call (859) 291-3800 or by email, info@thompsonenamel.com, to reserve space.

Thompson Enamels are lead-free glass products available in various particle sizes and formulated to fit a variety of metal and glass substrates.  These products are described in terms of temperature and expansion to help you select a suitable enamel  for your particular project.  The best way to select an enamel  is to determine their properties in the following sequence: (1) Fusing Temperature  (2) Fit or Compatibility and  (3) Color.

It is important to pre-test enamels prior to using;  1) printed color charts do not always perfectly match the  product they represent, and 2) there may be slight variations in the character of any given enamel from batch to batch.

80 mesh enamel is the standard particle size available to our customers unless specified otherwise.  80 mesh is glass  ground to a particle size which is slightly finer than granular  sugar.  It is normally applied by sifting, but can also be mixed with water and charged onto the substrate surface.

6/20 mesh enamels are particles that have an average diameter  of about 1/16" to 1/8".  These particles are ideal for bead making. Lump enamels are particles that range from 1/16" to 1" in diameter. A variety of painting and liquid enamels are also available for  specific substrates listed in our catalog.

For expanded information about the products we offer and  the technology involved to use them, see the description of the  Thompson Enamel Workbook.
